Is it common for hair loss to be caused by nutrient deficiencies?

Even in today's era of obesity, can hair loss be caused by nutrient deficiencies?

Proteins?

While nutrient deficiencies can contribute to hair loss, it is not a common cause in the general population. Severe or prolonged nutrient deficiencies, such as those resulting from extreme dieting or prolonged hospitalization, are more likely to lead to hair loss.

Hair is primarily composed of keratin, a protein. Consuming adequate protein is crucial for hair growth as it provides the building blocks for keratin synthesis. When we consume protein-rich foods, they are broken down into amino acids, which are then utilized by cells under the guidance of genes to produce keratin protein, ultimately forming hair strands.

A balanced and healthy diet rich in protein provides the essential amino acids required for hair growth, eliminating the need for separate protein supplements.

Vitamin? Mineral?

Keratin is synthesized by keratinocytes. Within keratinocytes, coenzymes act as essential cofactors for enzymes involved in keratin protein synthesis.  Biotin (vitamin B7), vitamin B5, and vitamin B12 (cobalamin) are crucial nutrients for optimal coenzyme function. While these nutrients are required in small amounts, they are generally not deficient in healthy individuals who consume a balanced diet.

However, due to reduced exposure to sunlight, many Koreans experience vitamin D deficiency, which is synthesized in the skin with the aid of sunlight. Therefore, vitamin D supplementation may be necessary. Additionally, the average blood zinc concentration in South Korea is lower compared to other countries. Zinc plays a vital role in maintaining healthy cells, and the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety recommends a daily intake of 10mg.

Lastly, to promote hair health and combat general aging, a minimum daily intake of 1 gram of vitamin C is recommended.
